At this point I began to think about what Paul might have seen when he stood on this hill to speak with the philosophers of the city. When one sees what human beings are capable of one might be tempted to forget that it is God who enables us. The Holy Spirit brought to my remembrance the scripture where Paul reminded the philosophers that it is in God that we live move and have our very being.

Our schedule was filled with the various places that we were to visit during our brief trip. Many mornings our wake up call was 5:00 a.m.; I never overslept. I was eager to explore the city but I was equally excited about spending time with my fellow Mt. Taborites.

Rome was breathtaking! The architecture, culture and history of the city seemed overwhelming in a positive way. One has to actually visit the Vatican to appreciate its beauty. We were told by our guide that over twenty thousand people visit the Vatican each day. Imagine having something that so many people are interested in seeing that they literally come from all over the world just to bask in its aura.

The visit to the Vatican was great but for me the Coliseum was priceless. As I stood there totally mesmerized by the architecture, size and beauty of it, the only thing I remember saying was, ‘Bishop, I’m in Rome!’

It had always been a dream of mine to visit Europe. When I learned that Mt. Tabor would be visiting Greece and Rome to follow the foot steps of Paul, I knew that I would finally get the opportunity. This trip served a twofold purpose because first I was able to fulfill one of my life long dreams. Secondly, having been a religious knowledge teacher and now an evaluator of religious knowledge examinations, I got first hand experience of the things that I have been teaching and evaluating for the past twenty-three years.

My emotions were in overdrive. The seven hour plane ride felt like seventy minutes. Once we landed in Greece I remembered thinking to myself ‘This Is It’. I know that I should have been tired but I could not fall asleep. Subconsciously, I felt that I might miss something if I slept.

Mars Hill where Paul spoke to the people of Athens

I had many memorable moments in Greece; however, what stands out most in my mind was the visit to Mars Hill in Athens.

It was raining and very cold. I remembered Bishop Ellis gathering the group together and telling to us that he was aware that this visit was the highlight of the day but because of the weather and the fact that most people were not properly dressed for the rain he thought that it would be better if we omitted this portion of the trip.

Everyone wanted to press ahead so we went to the top of Mars Hill. We were not disappointed because Mars Hill provided a perfect view of the city. We were able to see the city in all of its splendor. I stood there in awe and amazement. As the cold rain fell; words seemed inadequate to describe the beauty of the city.
